Phonics programme
SKH Ling Oi provides phonics lessons to all students in J1, 2 & 3. These lessons, delivered by a Native English Teacher, systematically teach individual sounds, before blending and segmenting skills are introduced. Phonics skills enable:
- J1 students to identify and recall 31 sounds
- J1 students to learn how to blend sounds together to read words
- J1 students to learn how to segment sounds to be able to write words
- J2 & J3 students to identify and recall a further 24 sounds including diagraphs and trigraphs
- J2 & J3 students to develop and practise blending and segmenting skills to become independent readers and writers
J.1 – Space Town Literacy Programme
Our school has adopted the Space Town Literacy Programme for our J.1 students from 2024/2025 and it will further be implemented in other KS1 levels in the future. Apart from reading and writing, it includes additional aspects such as e-Learning, self-directed learning and a self-evaluation tool for schools to allow a more fruitful learning process for our KS1 students. The teaching of reading has been enhanced through the earlier introduction of guided reading and phonics strategies such as blending and encoding in J.1.
Space Town provides students with the opportunity to develop the ability to transfer their knowledge to new situations. In this programme, communicative language learning is the main focus, where the four skills are taught interactively and real-life situations are experienced in the classroom. Fun activities which are related to the content are often seen in the lessons, for example, making chocolate cakes during J.1 Unit 3 – Grandma and the Birthday Cake.
